St Germains Old Vicarage Marske The back of the Ship Inn at a barn fire. St germains lane can be seen winding its way up to the house and church in the background 1904 Picture of the house no date current picture of house 2007The house was built in 1859 and has a history. Owned by the church of England , then private owners, then the council, then back into private ownership. It has been used for the purpose of the installed vicarage of St Germains church, the private landlord sold land and converted the house to flats, the council bought the house and used it for single people who where homeless or of questionable behaviour. then it was bought my someone who wanted to build a nursing home, then by the current owners who have restored the house, gardens and garages. There are tales of secret tunnels for smugglers or a tunnel for use by the vicar to and from the church. it did exists but due to time and further building around the house it is not accessible. though parts of the garden from time time sink "just a little" it has an attic and a cellar. it is a beautiful house with a serene quality befitting an old vicarage. Part of the old garden wall still exists
